Dr. Tamara “Tami” Thome was raised a “corporate ” brat, moving every 2-3 years all over the United States until college. During college, she briefly dropped out of school to work, surf, paddle outrigger canoes and enjoy Polynesian culture. She then continued her studies at the University California- Santa Cruz and obtained a degree in Marine Biology. Not quite ready for medical school, Tami spent the next 7 years avoiding winter by teaching sailing, scuba diving, marine science and leadership development on 3-4 week experiential education trips all over the world. She also taught high school marine science and led 7 day kayak expeditions on the island of Eleuthera, Bahamas.
The medicine bug continued to bite and she ended up obtaining her MD from Virginia Commonwealth University and Emergency Medicine at Brown University. Throughout her training she spent as much time abroad as allowed working in resource limited settings but always on the ocean. After working in coastal Virginia for a few years, Tami and her husband have settled on the little island of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts to raise their two boys and continue to enjoy the ocean. Tami is excited to join Wild Med Adventures and combine her love for the ocean, education, medicine, travel and group experiences. She just returned from a fantastic week on the Bahamas Wild Med trip and is itching to go somewhere soon. Where to next? South Pacific? Indonesia? Maldives? Her bathing suit is always packed and ready to go.
