ITINERARY: (Speakers and times may change slightly based on availability and weather)

  • Day 1 – Arrive in Belize before 3:00 pm and walk over to Tropic Air or take a cab to Belize Water Taxi for your departure to San Pedro/Ambergris Caye. Transportation will be ready to take you to the lodge when you arrive on the island and you should arrive by 5:00pm - 6:00pm.

    • Introduction to Course & Dinner at 7:00pm

  • Day 2 – Included Activity

    • 3-Tank Local Dive / Full Day Fishing / Snorkel Tour / Massage

    • Evening Lectures

  • Day 3 – *Off Day (Optional Activity / Not Included)

    • Add your own activity as desired or relax on the beach with paddle-boarding, city tour, or mainland tour. You can also add additional days of fishing or diving here if desired

**3 activities are included in your course cost excluding the Blue Hole. You can pick any combination (For example: 3 days of fishing or 2 days fishing and one day Diving or one day diving, one day scuba, one massage (you choose any combination at check-out)

THE  TEAM / FACULTY:

  • The travel logistics and leadership will be provided by extremely experienced guides from Belize and staff from our lodge.

  • The Wild Med Adventures Team are all well traveled and experienced and promise to make your CME experience both educational and informative, but please note that we are only responsible for the educational aspect of this trip. We are not Guides and do not provide gear and/or other safety equipment for the adventure portion of this course. PRE-REQUISITES: (none)

  • EMT, Paramedic, Nurse, PA, NP, RRT, PhD or Physician to obtain CME accreditation. (Please Check with your governing body to ensure credits are acceptable)

  • If no CME needed, please feel free to attend and enjoy the lectures at no additional cost

  • A keen interest in wilderness & tropical medicine

  • A good level of physical fitness

  • Prepare and bring proper clothing for different activities

  • Non-Medicals Welcome to Attend

TRIP INSURANCE AND PRE-TRIP MEDICAL:

  • Delegates should have personal insurance to cover any in-country medical examinations or injuries, rescue/evacuation insurance as well as some form of trip insurance to cover missed flights, weather delays and other potential trip delays. We recommend Global Rescue for our international CME trips.

  • PLEASE set up an appointment with a travel clinic to ensure all appropriate vaccinations and prophylaxis medications for Belize. The CDC is a useful resource. You should also discuss your travel plans with your physician.

Excluded: Flight from destination to Belize and water or air transportation to Ambergris Caye / San Pedro. Additional activities not included that you may wish to do on your "free" days such as mainland tours, extra diving or fishing, massage, etc., any personal gear needed for the trip such as snorkel gear, hiking gear, or other equipment. Any additional costs for lunch, gratuities, delays, injuries, trip insurance, medical & rescue insurance or cancellations. Tips for all activities are not included and minimum tip of $50-$100/guide per day and $100pp for lodge / week is recommended.

***Please note: Full payment due within 90 days of course or a $250 fee will be added to your final cost**

  • Cancellation Policy: Your deposit for the travel portion of the course is nonrefundable. The entire balance of your trip fee and CME fee will be due 90 days prior to departure. If you have not paid in full prior to 90 days before the start of the course a late fee of $250 will be applied to final cost or we have the right to cancel your trip. There will be no refund after 90 days prior to course. If you cancel greater than 90 days of beginning of trip, you will be refunded 50% of total trip cost. If you cancel trip 120 days before trip you will be reimbursed full price excluding deposit.

  • Our program focuses on treatment of the most common injuries and illnesses encountered while traveling to tropical areas and remote locations.

MAIN EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:

  • The goal of the Tropical & Dive Medicine CME Conference is to provide participants with a unique environment to experience essential medical-related topics and learn skills while collaborating with expert faculty through educational activities including lectures, hands on work-shops, and Adventure Excursions.

  • Development of this CME curriculum is formed by the following key objectives:

    • Provide educational opportunities based on core curriculum of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine.

    • Provide education of value to providers who care for the medical needs and also those involved with coordination of tropical medicine educational activities, including medical providers who must educate and instruct travel safety with their patients.

    • Provide education of interest to wilderness and austere-activity enthusiasts.

    • After attending this conference, the participants will be able to:

      • Establish a set of treatment priorities for care of the sick or injured in remote settings.

      • Prevent, diagnose, and manage illnesses and injuries in austere environments.

      • Demonstrate increased knowledge and skills in recognizing and treating the most common illnesses and injuries encountered in remote environments, including tropical environments.

      • Understand objective risk-assessment in wilderness environments from the perspective of the medical professional acting as a trip leader.

      • Understand the pathophysiology and management of acute emergencies related to remote environments.

TARGET AUDIENCE: 

  • Intended as continuing education for physicians, PA's, NP's, nurses, and medics who aspire to work or teach as a field instructor/provider in remote environments or who may work in remote clinics and deal with the injuries sustained in tropical environments.

  • Graduates from other wilderness medicine programs (e.g. FAWM, MFAWM) who want to gain experience and skills in Remote Medicine.

  • Individuals pursuing a Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM™)
